“In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill.”
To a certain kind of player, these words read as a verse in a sacred gamer gospel. Silent Hill 2 is a testament to its time and stands alone in the franchise that bears its name.
Until now.
A Revealing New Transmission
In the Silent Hill Transmission video, an hour-long announcement cum publicity event, Konami revealed a fresh new look at their latest projects. The special presentation included a look at many new properties, including Silent Hill: Townfall, Silent Hill: Ascension, Silent Hill f, and even teased a new Silent Hill-based movie.
From the opening scene, the viewer is treated to a familiar sight: a desperate man in a dingy bathroom tinted David Fincher-green. The three-minute preview serves as another object lesson in what the Unreal Engine 5 is capable of, serving up an immersive otherworld of gray light and never ending fog. The scene is a stylish re-imagining from the Bloober Team, the Krakow-based game studio known for works like Observer, Blair Witch, and The Medium.
“One of our primary goals is to preserve the atmosphere that made Silent Hill 2 so exceptional, while also modernizing many aspects of the game’s overall gameplay,” said game director Mateusz Lenart.
The Legends Return
However, Bloober Team will not be alone as they embark on this classic remake. Returning to the franchise are Silent Hill legends: composer Akira Yamaoka and artist Masahiro Ito. Yamaoka has teased a fresh approach to the music of Silent Hill 2, “The remake also has a new musical style, new challenges, and sound design and music.
Along with next-gen graphics, the new Silent Hill 2 remake is teasing some new advancements beyond its stylish new look. The remake will no longer use loading screens between scenes, creating a seamless journey for the player. The audio and haptic controls deliver a new range of possibilities and promise to deliver a new and unique experience for console users. Unlike its 20 year-old forebear, Silent Hill 2 will incorporate an over-the-shoulder combat system. Gone are the days of ‘tank controls’ as the new version will put it in line with most modern games.
And yes, Pyramid Head will be there, too.
